From wondering what comes next to feeling right at home.
Making the move to Atrium
I was living in an apartment on my own, and my daughter wanted me to be closer to her so she could help when I needed it. She thought this would be a safer and more comfortable place for me, and she was right. The moment I arrived, I felt at ease. It felt like the right place to call home.
A smooth and welcoming transition
The transition was much easier than I expected. Everyone here was so kind and welcoming. What surprised me most was how smoothly everything went and how lively and active each day is. I thought it might be quiet or lonely, but instead, there’s always something happening and always someone to talk to.

My favourite part of life here
Definitely the people. I’ve made wonderful friends, and I feel comfortable and cared for. The staff are excellent. They bend over backwards to help you, and it truly feels like one big family. You’re never alone here, and that means everything.
Activities I enjoy and staying connected
I struggle with many activities because my vision is so limited, but I still find joy in being part of things. I love live music, and I enjoy sitting and chatting with the other residents. Even with my blindness, everyone makes me feel included and welcome. I never feel left out.

Advice for someone considering retirement living
I would say, “Just do it.” This is the best place to be. Life becomes so much easier—you don’t have to worry all the time, and you’re surrounded by people who care. You get help when you need it and companionship when you want it.
The meaningful work and connections that shaped my life
For almost 20 years, I volunteered at a women’s prison once a month, leading craft sessions with the inmates. I learned so much from those girls about their stories, their struggles, and their strength. It was meaningful work and an experience I’ve never forgotten.
I worked as a pharmacy technician in a hospital for many years. I loved my job not just the work itself, but the people I worked with. We had a wonderful team, and we shared a lot of laughs and good memories. My family has also been such an important part of my life; I’m lucky to have them.
Who inspires me now
My daughter, she’s my baby, even now. And her daughter too. They take such good care of me, and I’m forever grateful. I joke that sometimes she probably wants to toss me into the bay, but she never does. Her husband is a gem as well. Their love and support inspire me every day.

Rediscovering friendship and connection
Friendship. I’ve rediscovered how important it is to be surrounded by others. Without friends, life can feel very empty. I had friends in my old apartment, but it wasn’t the same. Here, it feels like a real community where people care about one another.
How life has changed for the better
I would absolutely recommend this home to others. My day-to-day life is easier, happier, and more meaningful. I feel like I’m part of something bigger. I look forward to getting up in the morning, going to breakfast, and laughing with friends. There’s always something going on, and there’s always someone to help if you need it. I enjoy not having to worry and just being able to live.
