From losing independence to finding comfort, friendship, and a place that truly feels like home.
Why I chose Atrium as my home
I was in the hospital for four and a half months, and my health made it so I couldn’t go back home. My niece and my doctor suggested I move into a retirement home. After I broke my femur, I was bedridden, so my niece visited a few homes, and she told me this one was the best. She brought me here, and I said, “This is the place for me.” Her father and son even had the room ready for me when I arrived. It felt like home right away, so welcoming, cozy, and full of wonderful antiques.
Settling in and feeling supported
My transition was easy because my niece took care of everything, including my home. I received the help I needed right away. My room felt so homey and lovely, the meals were delicious, and I quickly made many friends.

My favourite part of life here
The friendships make all the difference. Winter can be very lonely when you’re by yourself, but here, there are always people around. It’s comforting and uplifting. The staff and residents are all so kind, helpful, and loving. Everyone here does their part, and it truly feels like one big family.
What brings me joy each day
I enjoy many things, even though arthritis in my hands limits what I can do. I love music, the entertainment, and Joan’s hymn singing. I also enjoy Bingo and the everyday hustle and bustle of the home.

Advice for someone considering retirement living
I would say, “Just come, you’ll never be happier.” The friendships you make and the way we all support each other here make it truly special.
My life before Atrium: Teaching, family, and adventure
I was a special education teacher for 32 years, and I loved every minute of it. I worked with so many incredible children and parents. I was very fortunate to have that career, and I still have former students who call and stay in touch with me.
My career meant a lot to me, and I was blessed with a wonderful family. I was never married, but my nieces and nephews are like my own children. I used to go shopping in the States with some of the other teachers. We’d leave on Friday night with snacks, and when we came back, we’d have little fashion shows. When I saw Janet here, I thought we could reminisce about those times. My favourite place I ever traveled to was Ireland, the music, the scenery, and the people were just beautiful.
What inspires me now
My faith inspires me, and so do the people here. Honestly, everyone has something unique about them. I always thought if I could be half as good as my mother, I’d be happy. The residents and staff here feel like family, and they’re inspiring in their own ways.
A happier outlook and full life
I would 100% recommend this home to others. It’s a terrific place. My niece told me she would only put me somewhere I felt comfortable and she was right. I settled in quickly. I love going out, seeing friends, getting to know people, and there’s always something to do, no time to be bored. The food is amazing, and the variety is wonderful.
